Clinical Study of Diverticular disease of Cecum and Ascending Colon

Abstract
Diverticular disease of the cecum and ascending colon is a relatively uncomon disease, often having a difficulty in diagnosis.
In fact, the cecal diverticulitis is very difficult to differentiate from acute appendicitis due to very similar symptoms and signs of acute appendicitis.
We experienced 39 cases of diverticular disease of the right side colon from January 1991 to September 1994 at the Department of General surgery,
Han Il Hospital.
There were 22 Men and 17 Women. The range of the age was from 17 to 83 years, and the average age of these cases was 39.7 years.
As a preoperative diagnosis, 17 cases were acute appendicitis.
30 cases were managed by operative treatment and 9 cases were managed by conservative treatment.
The surgical procedure of the colon diverticulitis were Appendectomy only(5 cases), Appendectomy with divertculectomy(6 cases), Appendectomy with partial cecectomy(6 cases), Partial Right colectomy(11 cases), Right hemicolectomy(2 cases).
We encountered cecal diverticulitis(5 cases) at Laparotomy, which diagnosed preoperatively as a acute appendicitis.
The diverticulosis without complication were treated satisfactory by only incidental Appendectomy and antibiotic therapy.
